Primary Purpose:
Looking for a senior leader that wants to join a fast an effective team, focused on eliminating corneal blindness in underserved populations around the globe. SightLife has a successful track record of partnering with governments, hospitals, eye banks and surgeons in developing countries to build their own capabilities and capacity to provide over 1,500 transplants per month to the 10 million corneal blind waiting to have their sight, livelihood and independence restored. Reporting to the Chief Global Officer (CGO), and serving as an integral member of the executive leadership team, the Vice President (VP) of Development & Fundraising will be responsible for development and fundraising efforts globally and for leading a systematic and comprehensive functional and structural model for a Development department.

The VP of Development & Fundraising will be an ambassador for the organization to advance the organization's position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and philanthropic support for the organization. This individual is responsible for managing the development team to expand and diversify the organization’s funder base and philanthropic giving and developing and implementing a strategic development plan. Will evaluate and manage the fundraising efforts and perform both strategic and tactical operations relevant to SightLife’s development efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Thoroughly understand SightLife’s history and culture, including its governance structure, leadership team, staff and board members.
  • Create a strategic plan for the development department, identifying both short term and long term goals that align with SightLife’s mission and vision and strategic priorities.  This includes, but is not limited to, developing tactics in the areas of major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, media/direct mail initiatives, donor prospecting, major campaigns, and/or special events.
  • In coordination with the Chief Global Officer, Leadership team, and Board, develop specific quarterly, annual and three-year fundraising targets that are realistic and financially sound.  Track and manage ROI of the respective fundraising initiatives.       
  • Actively seek and identify potential sources for national and international fundraising partnerships that will increase SightLife’s ability to implement its international focus. Build and manage fundraising strategies for the regions SightLife is active in, US, India, Greater Asia, Latin America and Africa.
  • Establish annual qualitative and quantitative goals, objective and accountabilities in order to increase donors and dollars raised.
  • Report regular progress against strategic and operational goals, including stewardship commitments, revenue and quota targets, and pipeline management details.
  • Proactively manage pipeline of minimum 3x revenue goals, overseeing opportunity stewardship through key development phases from the team and provide regular reports to CGO.
  • Work with Marketing to develop and implement an integrated strategic marketing and communications plan to advance SightLife’s brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities, and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences with the goal of educating and engaging current and future donors.
  • Partners with Marketing and Communication team to ensure brand representation and adherence across in-house advertising, graphic design, social media, direct mail, website and in communications such as the annual report and other media.
  • Establish solid donor segmentation strategy mapped to stewardship activities and recognition efforts, along with strategies for increasing donor loyalty and commitment.
  • Create and fine tune awards and recognition programs to recognize donors, volunteers, and others who have contributed financially.
  • Actively facilitate and stage all fundraising events.
  • Oversee SightLife’s employee and board engagement strategy, driving effective awareness, participation and recognition programs.
  • Personally drive fundraising solicitations, develop fundraising alliances, and maximize revenues from current and prospective sources.
  • Partner with Director of Development to create a major (+$1M), multi-year gift donor stewardship program.
  • Determine the most efficient and effective role of the CGO and other leaders to augment the strategies and tactics of the development plan.
  • Oversee research on funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position ahead of major funding changes or trends, secure funding for new, innovative service lines and SightLife global expansion into new markets.
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustment.

Education and Experience:
  • Required BA/BS; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years demonstrated senior-level fundraising experience in a medium-size organization, preferably in a non-profit and/or health-related business.
  • Success in initiating, developing, and enhancing relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Proven track record of significant gift acquisition, including multi-year and capacity-building contributions.
  • Experience with grant solicitation, membership programs, and community partnerships.
  • National and international development experience preferred.
  • Experience in global non-profit fundraising strategy and efforts.
  • Experience scaling existing programs to 2 or 3x where they entered.
  • Experience planning and implementing large scale fundraising campaigns (ideally $2M+).
  • Experience coordinating events for cultivation and donor appreciation.
  • Experience with impact investing and other non-traditional methods of fundraising.
  • Experience in identifying and securing 7-figure+ government grants.
  • A seasoned development professional experienced in all fundraising techniques, including major donor solicitation, corporate and foundation grant-seeking, grant writing, government grant development, special events and annual fundraising.
